FLORIDA POEM

My house is where
the Everglades
used to be.

Northerners came
and paved its edges
planted exotic flowers

thirsty Melaleuca trees
Australian pines
tentacles of green grass.

Now Florida is a woman
with teased hair
and too much makeup.
